When Your Sitter Cancels Last Minute
Your sitter just cancelled and your flight is in three days. Do not panic. A cancelled sitter is a logistics problem with a solution, and the solution starts with the list you made before you needed it.
This is the post to read before it happens, because the backup plan only works if it exists ahead of time. Build it now, while everything is fine.
Step one: work the list
Call your second-choice sitter first, the one from when you were comparing options. Then the neighbor, the coworker with the dog, the family member you did not want to impose on. Imposing is fine. This is what the list is for.
Post in local dog-owner groups with specifics: dates, dog's size and temperament, what you pay. Desperation posts with no details get scrolled past. Clear posts with fair pay get answers.
Step two: boarding as the bridge
A boarding facility you have already toured is a fine backup for part of the trip. The key word is already: touring a facility for the first time the day before you leave is how bad placements happen.
Tour one boarding option when you book your sitter, even if you never plan to use it. Knowing it exists changes a cancellation from a crisis into a phone call.
Step three: split the trip if you must
Two sitters covering different halves of the trip beats one stressed stranger doing the whole thing badly. It takes more coordination, but the handoff between two prepared people is safer than one overwhelmed one.
Write the handoff down. When sitters change mid-trip, the written routine becomes the continuity. The Sitter Travel Pack exists for exactly this: anyone can pick up the week from the document, even on short notice.
Prevent the next cancellation
After the trip, figure out why it happened. Was it price? Book earlier and pay the deposit. Was it flakiness? That is what the trial overnight and the reference calls were for. Was it an emergency on their end? Then it was bad luck, and the backup list is the lesson.
Consider a small retainer for your regular sitter during your heavy travel season. Sitters prioritize the clients who treat them like professionals.
Keep the list warm
Your backup list decays. The neighbor moves, the second-choice sitter fills up, numbers change. Twice a year, send a quick message to your top two backups: still sitting? Still have my number? Thirty seconds of maintenance keeps the emergency plan real instead of theoretical.
